Boating scholarship students are required
to complete two semester long (13-14 week) internships in recreational
boating businesses or other organizations as part of their academic
program totaling 6 credits. These internships are intended to complement
and supplement their course work by providing students with a practical
exposure to different aspects of these businesses and organizations.
The internships must offer students opportunities to experience the
range of activities and functions conducted by boating businesses and
organizations. It is also desirable if the internship directly or indirectly
provides the student with opportunities for full-time employment. Students
are strongly encouraged, but not required, to complete the internships
in two different businesses or agencies.
While the internship is intended to
provide practical experience, there are important academic components.
Students must provide the coordinator a weekly report of their activities,
challenges they confronted, and what they learned. They must relate
the practical aspects of the business or organization with what they
learned in the classroom. They must also complete a project which requires
that they research and make recommendations relating to a challenge
or opportunity confronting the internship business or organization.
Students are able to research and
select their internships, but they should get final approval from Scholarship
Advisor and Internship Coordinator. The student, internship providers
and coordinator must all sign an agreement, which specifies each party's
requirements.
In an effort to encourage more
businesses and agencies to host internship students, the gift from RBIEF
allows MSU to pay half the cost of wages paid to the students provided
that the internships are completed in Michigan businesses and organizations.
If you are interested in hosting a student, please read the internship
requirements and complete this form.
