MSU's Boating Program

The academic program that is hosted in the Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies at Michigan State University is a blend of general education, commercial recreation and business courses. The intent is to provide students with a comprehensive exposure to concepts, problem solving and methods relevant to various careers in recreational boating businesses and organizations [Recreational Boating Curriculum].

   General Education Courses

Undergraduate students program of study must include courses in general education and also in a major. Students are exposed to a breadth of learning through completion of Writing, Math, and in many cases, Language and at least eight credits in three broad knowledge areas: Arts and Humanities, Biological and Physical Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences (ISS).

   Recreation Courses

Scholarship students also complete twenty credits of course work intended to provide them with an understanding of recreation and leisure concepts that are important in designing, providing and marketing recreation experiences and products. These courses also provide an understanding of concepts and methods important in the management of recreational facilities and services.

  Business Courses

Students are required to complete a 15 credit sequence of business courses that are relevant to for-profit businesses and not-for-profit organizations. These courses include: management, marketing, accounting, finance and business law.

  Tailoring Academic Programs

Students can further shape the program to their particular interests and career aspirations through the selection of electives including international experiences, independent and special problems courses, and application to take substitute courses. Michigan State University encourages international experiences. MSU's Study Abroad Program options are among the most diverse, with more than 200 programs in 60 countries on all continents. International experiences ranges in length from two to six weeks to a semester or an academic year, and they are offered year-round, including winter and spring break.

  Transferring from Community and Four Year Colleges
Students currently enrolled in community colleges or other four year institutions can transfer to MSU. MSU accepts a maximum of 60 credit hours from accredited two-year institutions toward graduation. Students may transfer to MSU an unlimited number of credits from accredited four-year institutions. To graduate with a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, transfer students must earn a minimum of 30 semester credits in coursework at MSU.
